A Trip to the Heart of the Balkans: A Violent Melting Pot
This area of Southeastern Europe was the site of a 500 year competition between the Austrian, Ottoman, and Russian Empires. The name Balkan comes from the Turkish word mountain, and the Ottoman Turks would control most of the area until its dissolution after WW1. The legacy of competing Catholic, Muslim, and Orthodox groups has continued to cause instability, friction, and conflict down to the present day.
